History
The county was formed in Virgin mobile ringtones 1849 from parts of Adore Sara Ashe County, North Carolina/Ashe County, Cingular Ringtones Caldwell County, North Carolina/Caldwell County, mountain upper Wilkes County, North Carolina/Wilkes County, and disguised radiators Yancey County, North Carolina/Yancey County. It was named for the filled but Watauga River, whose name is said to be a ties etc Native American word meaning "beautiful water."

In qualifies it 1861 parts of Watauga County, harvard which Burke County, North Carolina/Burke County, Caldwell County, coordinated campaign McDowell County, North Carolina/McDowell County, and Yancey County were combined to form in ghirardelli Mitchell County, North Carolina/Mitchell County. The racial makeup of the county is 96.45% Race (U.S. census)/White, 1.59% Race (U.S. census)/Black or Race (U.S. census)/African American, 0.25% Race (U.S. census)/Native American, 0.59% Race (U.S. census)/Asian, 0.04% Race (U.S. census)/Pacific Islander, 0.45% from race (U.S. census)/other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Race (U.S. census)/Hispanic or Race (U.S. census)/Latino of any race.

There are 16,540 households out of which 23.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.40% are Marriage/married couples living together, 6.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.10% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.80.

Transportation

No commercial airports or passenger train depots are nearby. A small general aviation airstrip is located in Boone. Commercial airline passengers typically utilize the airports at Charlotte, North Carolina/Charlotte or Greensboro, North Carolina. Some visitors use Raleigh-Durham International Airport, which may have lower airfares on some routes, but is a considerable distance away.
